CCTV cameras installed in toilets
Over the summer holidays we made the decision to install CCTV cameras in the corridor section of all of our new toilets (both toilets in the new build and the recently refurbished toilets in the porches). We have been working with students over the last year to look at ways we can continue to improve the school environment and prevent bullying and anti-social behaviour. One of the suggestions raised repeatedly by students was a desire for improved toilet facilities, especially with regard to feeling safe and comfortable when visiting the toilet during the school day.
Your son/daughter’s privacy is not in any way affected and we would not have gone ahead with the installation of these cameras if we had any concerns about students’ privacy. The camera’s lenses are positioned down the corridors of the toilet areas, covering the outside of cubicles and the sink/dryer area. These will only be monitored if a problem is reported, and the school has a strong CCTV policy which lists only a small number of staff members who must send a formal request to the Head of School to access the recordings.
The cameras have been installed to help prevent bullying and anti-social behaviour. The toilets are new and students do not want them to be defaced. We want to ensure that your son/daughter feels safe going to the toilet and should be able to go without worry. It is important to note that these changes are not a result of a specific incident but we are always striving to make the school a truly safe environment.
If you have any questions or concerns, or you would like to view the school’s CCTV policy, please contact Mr S Walton by ringing the school on 01670 812 166.
