When you join us at Ashington High School (AHS) Post-16 you will be joining a community of around 200 students. By the autumn of Year 11 you will be thinking seriously about deciding your Post-16 options – subjects and course type. Whether you are already at AHS or are new to the school, we will provide you with a carefully planned, step-by-step programme that will ensure that you are fully prepared to make the best possible choices. Through discussions and meetings with your tutor, careers advisor, subject teachers and Director of Post-16 you will have every opportunity to look at your strengths and to decide upon the most suitable options for you.
Significant events in the programme for students wishing to enter Post-16 provision at AHS in September 2017 are as follows.
Early October 2016
Current AHS students will receive information through tutors and assemblies, the new prospectus will be available to all prospective students.
Late October 2016
Information Evening at AHS for prospective Post-16 students and their parents, consisting of a short presentation and an opportunity for individual discussion with subject staff and current Year 12 and 13 students.
Last week of term consists of three days of ‘taster lessons’ for Yr 11 students to follow in up to six subjects of their choice. Find out what Yr 12 lessons will really be like and how they differ from GCSEs!
Submission of application forms, if possible. This assists us greatly in planning the timetable. In the event of a course being very unpopular or for staffing / teaching and learning reasons, we reserve the right to withdraw it at this stage.
Later applications are accepted, but as time goes on the timetable becomes less flexible and therefore options will be reduced.
March – May 2017
All students and their parents will be invited to have an individual meeting with the Post-16 Year Manager to discuss your application in greater detail.
After the GCSE results are published, you will be asked to re-affirm your choices the following day. At this stage it may still possible to alter your choices at an individual meeting with the Director of Post-16.
If you are on holiday please email firstname.lastname@example.org with any AHS Post-16 queries.
Year 12 Induction will take place on the Thursday of the first week of the Autumn term (full details will be issued in August). You will be introduced to your tutor and given further helpful information about the courses and Post-16 life in general. Your individual timetable will also be finalised and the teaching of all courses will commence.
There will also be a Year 12 Parents Information Evening before the end of September.
