Ashington Grammar Alumni visit
It was great to have 2 Ashington Grammar School alumni visit the school last month.
Ray Long and Bob Paton are both very successful businessmen who met recently at the British Computer Society President’s dinner held on the 42nd Floor of the Leadenhall Building in the City of London. The dinner is an annual event and is hosted by the outgoing President. On the Top Table were the previous President, the outgoing President, the future President (Ray, taking over in March for one year), the BCS CEO Bob Paton (as the recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to the IT Profession Award) and the Duke of Kent – so an extremely high powered top table!
Bob was sitting next to Ray, having never met him before, and as their conversation progressed it emerged that both had lived in Ashington and had attended Ashington Grammar School in the early seventies. Ray was there between 1973 and 1975 and Bob left at the end of the fifth form in 1972 – so they just missed each other. However, they both then went on similar career paths entering into the technology sector within the Civil Service.
Ray is a Director within the Department of Work & Pensions and Bob, now retired, was formerly the Managing Director of Accenture.
It was fantastic for us that Ray and Bob gave up their time to come into school to meet and inspire our students.
Ray said ‘It was great to return after all these years and to see first-hand the terrific work the school doing. There is a really positive atmosphere around the place and the students we met are a credit to the school. Please pass on our thanks to everyone who was involved in hosting us and let me know if there is ever anything we can do to help and support you in the future.”
A great day was had by all!
