Double Delight For Year 8 Boys’ Football
Ashington HS 5 – 1 St Benet Biscop’s
This game saw some great passing and moving right from the very start. Luke Heppell and Jack Blyth were pulling the strings in midfield, with James Huntley and Harry Barclay sitting in behind at centre-half. James Huntley fired in a thunderbolt volley from the edge of the box to put us ahead, after a set-piece had been headed clear. Archie Morpeth then smashed the ball back across the goalkeeper to make it 2 – 0. Liam Haig hustled in a tap in in the six-yard box after fine dribbling down the left wing by Lyall Chaplin. Liam Haig then scored our fourth and his second with a right-footed shot to put us well in control. We then conceded a penalty on the stroke of half-time which the visitors converted to make it 4 – 1. An own-goal following a Lyall Chaplin free-kick, deflected made the final score 5-1. An excellent first league victory for our year 8s.
St Cuthberts 0 – 6 Ashington HS
Their first National Cup fixture of the season ended in an emphatic 6 – 0 away win. Liam Haig got on the scoresheet twice, taking his goal tally for the season to four goals in two games. Harry Barclay fired home a shot from the edge of the box after a long run forward from centre-back. On his return to the side following injury, Joseph Hecel managed to score inside the six-yard box and Lyall Chaplin scored with a cross that evaded everyone. Working together was the foundation of this win; Thomas Douglas and Lyall Chaplin bossed the left-hand side of the park, whilst Liam Haig and Joseph Hecel led the line exceptionally well.
