Year 8 National Cup Success
Our Year 8 Football team recently played their third round National Cup tie away to Durham Johnson school.
A strong start was rewarded when a good move down the wing saw Lyall Chaplin to play a ball to Joe Hecel and he turned inside a defender to fire past the keeper and put us one up.
Durham Johnston had a very fast striker who looked dangerous but our back 3 of Harry Barclay, Jack Blyth and Thomas Douglas were quick and clever, reading the game well and putting in some great tackles to deny scoring opportunities.
However, the pressure finally paid off when the home side equalised following a cross from the left which was finished at the back post. Another good piece of play saw Durham Johnston find some space down the right hand side and a shot across goal dipped over the ‘keeper to make it 2-1.
Our boys then showed their fighting spirit and after good play between Luke Heppell, Joe Hecel, and Liam Haig, Lyall Chaplin was brought down in the box and he stepped up to finish the penalty into the roof of the net and take the game into extra time!
Extra time saw both sides focusing on keeping the defending tight and there were very few chances created.
With only a few minutes to go, Liam Haig played a brilliant ball through for Joe Hecel to run onto and finish from a tight angle to put us 3-2 ahead.
A couple of clearances in the last minute from James Hartley and then Jack Blythe protected our lead before the final whistle ended a really exciting game.
A tremendous performance from our Year 8 boys who have been drawn at home to Chester-le-Street in the next round.
